The Washington Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) recently emailed a warning about a scam targeting injured workers.
L&I has reported that some injured workers have received phone calls, emails, text messages, or social media messages from scammers claiming to work for the state and demanding the workers pay money to receive workers’ comp benefits or have their claims processed. L&I is asking everyone to spread the word: Neither L&I nor the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals (BIIA) would ask workers to pay fees for claim-related services. Anyone who suspects they may have received one of these suspicious messages should file a complaint with the Washington State Office of the Attorney General (available in English or Spanish). If someone is unclear whether a message is legitimate, they can contact Carlos Munoz at L&I or call 360-902-4229. If any of your employees report having received this kind of message, be sure to pass along the information for how to report it. L&I’s warning isn’t posted on its website, but it’s available on the King County Law Library’s website.
