L&I transitions reimbursement applications to online submission

It's time to move your Stay at Work and Preferred Worker reimbursement applications online (if you haven't already) and double-check you are getting all the reimbursements you can!

Beginning January 1, 2026, the Washington Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) is phasing out acceptance of Stay at Work and Preferred Worker wage and expense requests submitted by fax or mail for injured workers. Instead, these wage and expense applications should be submitted online through your “My L&I” account page. L&I has stated that paper applications will still be accepted for now, but has made it clear that it will be completely phasing out paper submissions in favor of online applications soon.

L&I offers a variety of incentive programs designed to give money back to employers who keep injured workers on the job. The Stay at Work and Preferred Worker programs can offer meaningful dollars when returning injured workers to light-duty or permanently restricted jobs.

Remember, the reimbursements limits nearly doubled this year! Eligible employers who file the appropriate paperwork requesting reimbursement can receive:

  • 50 percent wage reimbursement for the employee’s base wages, for up to 120 light duty or modified duty workdays (maximum $25,000 per claim); and
  • Expense reimbursement for tools, training, or clothing necessary to perform the light duty or modified duty work (within program limits).

Don’t let money slip through the cracks. Make sure you’re getting the full value of the program while supporting injured employees’ recovery, and submitting your applications online!
