DOL clarifies definition of spouse under FMLA

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) recently released a final rule that redefines who qualifies as a spouse under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). The new rule specifically says marriage is defined by state law where the marriage was entered into, including states where common law and same-sex marriages are recognized.

WASHINGTON: Tacoma adopts paid sick leave ordinance

On January 27, 2015, the Tacoma City Council voted 8-1 to adopt mandatory paid sick, safe, and bereavement leave for businesses within city limits. Incomplete FMLA policy language snares employer

When an employer’s Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) policy failed to include all of the eligibility requirements in the statute, an employee who met the stripped-down version of the policy may have been entitled to FMLA leave, ruled a federal appeals court.
